There’s a simple mistake you and I both make when it comes to happiness.
I’ll tell you what it is in just a moment, but first let me give you a little background.
I was talking with my good friend Michael last night on the phone. His area of expertise is helping people to survive affairs.
He’s very good at it.
And we got to talking about happiness.
I was saying how trying to stay happy is a significant source of stress in itself.
And that’s when he hit me with his bombshell, he said:
“Humans can’t be happy and do you want to know why?”
He had me, I was hooked.
“Of course I do!” I exclaimed “Who wouldn’t want to know the answer to that question?”
This was his reply:
“Put simply, you can’t be happy because you’re looking in the wrong place for it. Most people look outside of themselves for happiness. They get their sense of worth, of value, of meaning from other people.
This sets you up for failure, cos you can’t control the outside world or other people. If they turn on you suddenly your very identity can be smashed into tiny bits.
True happiness comes when you stop looking outside for it and start looking within yo!”
“So happiness is an inside job then?” I said after a short pause.
“Of course. And that’s where virtually everybody gets it wrong. Sure it’s corny as hell but it’s true. If your happiness, your sense of identity, of value of self worth comes from outside of you, from the relationships you have, from your husband or wife, the objects and gadgets you own it’s never going to last very long.”
And the penny dropped.
I got it.
True, lasting happiness is inside you. It’s not in your iPhone or that new iPad mini you’re planning to get.
Yes of course our relationships can be a source of happiness, but if you’re happiness foundations are built upon your partner or your children you’re in a very vulnerable position.
Knowing this is a great first step.
And the next?
Of course I’m biased. But the ultimate tool for this inner exploration is Qigong.
Practicing Qigong the way I teach it allows you to be physically relaxed, emotionally calm, mentally focused and spiritually aware. All at the same time! Which is why it makes you feel so good.
And the best bit?
It’s completely within your control.

Enjoy your practice.
