I was sat in a meeting on Sunday evening when my inner voice came up with this gold nugget:
“I wish I could stop feeling so worthless…”
Like a greased pig on a slide the voice continued and gained momentum.
“There’re so many people in this room so much better than me…”
“Bob’s work in particular is brilliant, he’s so smart and so much more successful than me…”
It wasn’t long before I was feeling proper miserable and sorry for myself.
And then something incredible happened.
Out of the blue, came this thought:
“This isn’t true.”
“You’re not worthless. You do a great job of being a husband and a father. You’ve written 3 highly praised books on Qigong…”
On and on it went.
Until finally it hit me.
A great awareness I’d like to share with you. A mistake I’ve been making for 41 years and it’s kept me small, it’s kept me weak and it’s frequently made me miserable.
If you’re anything like me, then there’s a good chance you’ve been making this mistake the whole of your life too.
Yes, you’re right…
I’m deliberately building up to revealing this insight to you. Because it’s so simple there’s a real danger you’ll read it, think ‘Oh yeah, that makes sense.‘
And then forget all about it.
Please don’t do that.
Oh, and when I’m talking about voices in my head. I’m not talking about a psychological disorder. No, I’m referring to the constant, tsunami of thoughts, judgements, ideas and criticisms that we bombard ourselves with every waking moment.
You might have heard it called ‘The Monkey Mind‘.
Whatever, we all have this never ending flow of consciousness going on.
Except when you practice Qigong the way I teach it.
Then you get at least 15 minutes off!
Okay, are you ready for me to reveal the biggest mistake I’ve been making my entire life?
A mistake I’ll wager, you’ve been making too.
Please don’t blow it off.
Here it is:
The biggest mistake I’ve been making for the last 41 years is to believe what the voices in my head say is true.
Think about it, why do you believe that that thought in your head is true?
Because it sounds like it’s coming directly from you. I mean it’s in your head right? Where else could it be coming from?
Now we’re getting somewhere, but that’s a whole can of worms for another day. If you want to dig deeper into this topic I recommend the excellent book:

But just for today, I want you to remember that you don’t have to believe what the thoughts/voices in your head say is true.
Especially if they’re being mean, spiteful or hateful towards you.
