In qigong, every human being is understood to have three dimensions: form (jing), energy (qi), and mind (shen). Practicing qigong cultivates all three simultaneously — which means any exercise practiced correctly will develop the mind. But three exercises from the 18 Lohan Hands are particularly cost-effective for mental clarity, concentration, and mind expansion specifically.
Recommended Exercises
Reverse Hands Bend Waist (Nourishing Kidneys)
The standout recommendation for mind expansion. A sub-meridian of the kidney meridian connects directly to the brain, making this exercise particularly effective for students, scholars, and anyone who needs to improve concentration and mental stamina. If you find it hard to focus or sustain mental effort, this is the first exercise to consider.
Big Turn of the Cosmos
Excellent for mental alertness and focus — particularly useful before extended periods of creative or intellectual work. The energy it generates is clean and sustained, without the crash that follows caffeine.
Fierce Tiger Pushing Mountains
Well known for developing internal force, but it also nourishes the brain and enhances marrow — making it a valuable exercise for those looking to support long-term mental capacity alongside physical vitality.
Form vs Qigong: An Important Distinction
The benefits above are only available when these exercises are practiced as qigong — with a Qigong State of Mind (QSoM) and genuine energy flow. Practicing the physical movements alone will not produce the same results. The form is not the art of qigong.
Learning directly from a qualified instructor is strongly recommended. If that isn’t possible, your next best option is to learn qigong online. The exercises above are covered in full inside my online course.
